RE: Letter of Introduction
Dear Students, Staff, and Families of Finn Hill and EAS Middle Schools,
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dr. Joseph Smith and I am so honored, excited and thrilled to be the new principal of Finn Hill and EAS Middle Schools. I am a native New Yorker who has migrated to western Massachusetts back in 2006. I have taught in both Elementary and Middle school for 11 years before wanting to have greater influence and impact as an administrator. I enjoy learning, teaching, and leading. My hobbies are chess, gardening, kayaking, and hiking. I love cooking, listening to music, and learning about new cultures. I have four beautiful children and two goldfish.
I am proud to be part of such a welcoming, thriving, and diverse community. I believe that every student deserves the very best that Lake Washington School District has to offer. It is our mission to ensure that each student has access to rigorous curricula, feels confident socially, emotionally, and academically. Also, we want to make sure that all students feel included, heard, and validated.
This past school year took us by surprise. The pandemic brought unforeseen challenges maintaining physical space and distance, while not isolating. We figured out smart ways to stay safe, connected, and healthy. The school year also was filled with tragedies. The brutal killing of George Floyd and many others forced us to look inward at our humanity. Again, despite these challenging times, we managed to stay strong, supportive of each other, and we will continue to do so. We have developed a pattern of overcoming giant obstacles- the bigger the obstacle, the stronger we become!
This school year is going to be filled with continuous challenges and we will continue to face the challenges without fear, staying connected, and supporting one another. I plan on getting to know each of you formally and informally. Finally, I want us all to dream big! Dream a big life filled with joy, happiness, and human connectedness.
Let us each bring our best selves forward to school year 2020-21!
Principal Dr. J. Smith
